Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden, Applegate Valley Spiral 36, Roussanne/Viognier/Marsan
Roussanne/Viognier/Marsanne, Applegate Valley, Oregon, 2018 (750 ml)
The New York Times called Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden “A biodynamic cult favorite among chefs from San Francisco to New York." The founders, Barbara and Bill Steele, have a dedication to making classic, food-friendly Rhone-style wines in the most ecologically responsible way possible. They currently have a 117 acre polyculture farm, with only 25 acres of vines planted. On their farm, you can find asparagus, cherries, lavender, and heirloom orchard fruit as well as hazelnut trees inoculated with the Périgord black truffle to increase the biodiversity of the land. All of their wine is produced only 100 feet from the vineyard to cut back on emissions, and their tasting room is the first tasting room in the world to be Petal Certified, creating more energy than it uses!
All of this could be seen as pretty gimmicky until you taste these wines! The close attention to detail, and the respect they show for their process every step of the way, has allowed Cowhorn to create truly elegant wines. The Cowhorn Spiral 36 has rich fruit flavors of apricot and mango that are rounded out by notes of honey and ginger. You can enjoy it with roast chicken or your favorite summer meal, but it is also oh-so good on the patio in the sunshine.
